| 2005/2006 Agricultural Campaign
to Cost $43 million
The 2005/2006 agricultural campaign, which
will begin next month and last through September, will cost
about $43 million. The money will be used to purchase seeds,
fertilizers, pesticides, ploughs, and animal vaccines and will
fund acti vities to expand rural development. The scope of the
agricultural campaign has grown every year since 2002. This
year the total area under cultivation will increase by three
percent. The campaign supports about 15 types of produce, from
tubers, to cattle, to grains. Despite annual gains, however,
Angola continues to have a food deficit of 47 to 50 percent.
In related news, the Japanese government has pledged approximately
$2 million toward a program to increase food production in Angola.
The Japanese grant will be used to distribute farming equipment,
fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs.
