| Indian Government to Provide $40
Million Loan to Rehabilitate Angolan Railways
The Indian government is providing a $40
million credit facility to Angola to help the country rebuild
its railway networks. The two countries signed five cooperation
agreements recently that cover professional development of railroad
staff, provision of operational equipment and business management
for the Mocamedes Railroad, and the rehabilitation of railroad
offices. As part of this credit facility, over the next two
months India will supply $17 million worth of railroad equipment
to rehabilitate the Mocamedes Railroad. The equipment includes
39 railroad cars - 15 first class cars, 22 second class cars,
and two dining cars, as well as baggage vans and first aid kits.
Transportation Minister Andre Luis Brandao said that in addition
to the rehabilitation of the Mocamedes Railroad, his ministry
is also planning to rehabilitate the Matala/Menongue rail line
this year. The minister said that financial resources are already
in place to start renovating the first segment of this rail
link.
