| The Swedish Government Provides
$6 Million for Health Programs
The Swedish government announced this week
that it was providing $6 million in assistance to the Luanda
provincial director of health to support mother-child health
initiatives. The goal of the initiative is to reduce the high
rate of infant mortality and maternal mortality by expanding
access to sanitary facilities in suburban areas and improving
staff training and infrastructure. As part of the project, the
Swedish government will also provide two small cars, seven generators
and five ambulances that will be distributed to the district
areas of Terra Nova, Cacuaco and Viana to improve transportation
and communication with pediatric hospitals and maternity centers
located in the city of Luanda. Sweden also funded the construction
of nine childbirth rooms in the surrounding areas of Luanda
to provide medical assistance to pregnant women living in heavily
populated areas outside of the city.
