| Granite exports generate $4 million
in revenues
Angola exported 15 million cubic meters
of granite in 2004, generating $4 million in revenues for the
country, according to Abel Costa, Director of Energy, Water,
Geology and Mines in Huila province. Major markets for Angolan
granite are Spain, Canada, Portugal, Japan, South Africa, and
Panama. Angolan granite is sought after because it preserves
its original luster even after its industrialization. Studies
reveal that Huila Namibe and Cunene provinces all possess granite
deposits capable of being exploited. The areas that are the
most rich in ornamental stones such as granite are Tchicuatiti,
Quihita, Chimbemba, and Tulunga in Huila province and Bibala
and Virei in Namibe province.
Mr. Costa also said the number of extractive companies operating
in the area had increased from four to ten between 2001 and
the beginning of 2005, a fact that reflects the growing importance
of mining to the area.
