Bank Sign Twelve Credit Agreements
This week the Angolan government signed
12 credit agreements with the Chinese Export-Import Bank, as
part of the $2 billion credit facility the Chinese government
provided to Angola. The credit agreements will support development
projects in the agriculture, energy, water, education and mass
media sectors. Energy and water projects will account for $240
million of the credit agreements. One of the largest of these
projects is the upgrading of the electrical supply line from
the Capanda dam to Luanda. Capanda currently produces 260 megawatts
of energy; however, a significant portion of this energy is
not being used due to a lack of supply lines. In addition to
the Capanda/Luanda supply line, another 220 kilowatt energy
supply line will be constructed between the Cambambe dam in
Kwanza Norte province and Luanda. Extending and repairing the
city of Luanda’s electricity supply network, and the repair
and modernization of the electricity substations in Cazenga
and Viana districts are also planned as is the upgrading of
Luanda’s water supply system. Minister of Energy and Water Botelho
de Vasconcelos estimates that Luanda residents should begin
to see improvements in the electricity and water supply in 18
months, as the projects will take between 15 to 24 months to
complete.
In the agriculture sector, agricultural development and extension
projects are planned for Huila, Capanda, Caxito and Moxico.
Valued at $200 million, the projects will include the installation
of new irrigation systems and the purchase of agricultural machinery,
including tractors.
