| Angola Fish Harvest Reaches 230,000
Tons in 2004
ANIP NEWS, 12.08.2005
Angola’s fishing industry caught 230,000
tons of fish in 2004 according to the National Institute for
Fishing Research. The sea catch included varieties such as mackerel,
sardines, grouper, and corvine. Of this about 68,000 tons of
fish were frozen, 65,000 tons were dried and salted and another
4,200 tons were processed into fish meal. Artesian fishing in
Samba, Ingombota and Cacuaco, contributed nearly 105,000 tons
toward the 2004 catch. While catch levels were satisfactory,
the country is still experiencing difficulties with its domestic
distribution network due to poor road conditions that make transportation
between coastal areas and the interior of the country difficult.
The actual distribution channels are mostly informal ones, largely
a wholesale cash-and-carry system.
